Speak in English … or what?

Just the other day, I learnt something vital from a student. The school rule is, to speak in English on campus and on the bus, because in Surat, there is practically no other environment outside school providing students with opportunities to develop second language (L2)  fluency. This student told me that she only met her friend at school and she could only share her intimate feelings and thoughts with her friend in their mother tongue (L1). I had been rather crassly unaware of this aspect of the matter before. After all, it’s an English medium school and all that! So, what do you think?
