Music Appreciation

Dear Students

Here is a cultural challenge for you. Listen to this classical music video – it has two basic Indian instruments, the flute and tabla, played by two Indian ustads (experts), Rakesh Chaurasia on the flute and Zakir Hussain on the tabla.

Listening to this video will challenge you to develop the patience to focus and sit still for almost 20 minutes. Are you capable of it? Your ancestors discovered meditation – how much concentration can you manage?

Note the fine techniques of flute and tabla – this is the mark of mastery.

Find out from your teachers and reply in Comments:

  • What is the technical term for the opening of a raaga
  • The name of the raaga
  • Identify the taalas (there is more than one)
  • What is the last part of the performance called?

This is another lesson in learning from real life. You have learned patience, concentration and the answers to the questions above. How do you feel now?

The video is amazingly superb with a lot to learn. Truly it helped me to a big extent to meditate and concentrate, especially when ustad rakesh Chaurasia holds on to only “a” sur for more than 45 seconds.
